Catherine Bourne (née Hill) is the leading female character in Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Garden of Eden. Twenty-one, wealthy, and rebellious, she has been married to David Bourne for three weeks at the opening of the novel. Nicknamed “Devil” by her husband, her gender identity goes back and forth between male and female throughout the novel.1
In the 2008 film adaptation she was played by Mena Suvari.2
